Starzenica (Ruda parish) 1pm (Oct 28)/Nov 9, 1896 Teofila Fuks, 50, midwife + witnesses Antoni Kozłowski, 34 & Józef Fuks, 30 report the birth of a baby girl born at Starzenice at 9pm on (Oct 27)/Nov 8 of Marianna Surma, 21, (unmarried) maidservant. The girl was christened Józefa, godparents: Józef Surdyban and Agnieszka Fuks.
The father's name is not mentioned in the Russian record, which means Józefa was baptised as an illegitimate child, but there are two much later margin notes in Polish. The first one of May 12, 1954 demands that the Public Registry Officer in Olewin inscribe the name Antoni as the father's name. The other of Nov 23, 1962 demands that the Public Registry Officer in Wieluń inscribe the surname Surma as the father's surname in accordance with Article 80 of Public Registry Bill. An interesting situation where two legal decisions concerning first the Christian name and then the surname of the same person are made in two different offices in the interval of 8 years when Józefa was quite old already - this may have been connected with either Józefa's retirement from work and/or inheritance proceedings. Another mystery is why the unmarried mother and the father had identical surnames.
